gratitudeAn Embarrassment of Riches

April 24, 2008

Greetings, Prayer Team!

Taped to the inside ledge of my desk, where I will see it most often and therefore where it most needs to be, are three little sentences that sustain and challenge me each day.

“’In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.’ 1 Thes. 5:18 This command is an assurance that even the things which appear to be against us will work for our good. God would not bid us be thankful for that which would do us harm.” The Ministry of Healing, 255.

As you know, I have been counting my blessings and gifts, writing each one down in blue ink on a plain white piece of paper labeled “One Thousand Gifts” at the top. This joy in gratitude, this discipline of optimism, opens my eyes wide to the glories of serving a Master who fills each moment with an embarrassment of riches. Flowers in their spring glory, a letter from a friend, harmonica music, a sunset—every sunset, old Uncle Wiggily books, parents who love each other, a brother who sings to me on the phone, too much lettuce volunteering in the garden, words, a blooming tree in the first light of morning…

All these things, or perhaps my noticing them, bring me greater joy every day. I feel sure that is what God intended when He told us to give thanks.

Yesterday, as I left my office to walk across the street to my pleasant home, I glanced up at the gas station sign. Up another five cents! Before I could formulate a complaining thought, the Holy Spirit brought something else to mind: “…even the things which appear to be against us…”

Thank you for the higher gas price, Father. I have no idea why, I added. I’m still a beginner at this thanksgiving in trials business. It may be that real gratitude goes beyond what is obviously sweet to the tongue and pleasant to the eye, embracing every moment that challenges God to come through for His people.

On Monday, the Lakes Highway District board again delayed their decision regarding MiVoden’s request; however, the atmosphere of the meeting was amicable and sympathetic to the camp’s plans. Please keep praying, and remember the next meeting scheduled for the first week of May.

Remember also Nina Prohaska and her family as they mourn the loss of her husband Lynn. Lynn served on the Streams of Light leadership committee, where his dedication and experience proved a strong asset. We look forward to seeing him again soon, at Christ’s return.
