May 22, 2008

Greetings, Prayer Team!

Though we know of many marriages throughout the Bible, I think today of that couple from Cana, whose wedding ceremony and feast became the starting point of Christ's public ministry on earth. What a profound experience it must have been to have the Savior of the universe attending, in the flesh, their wedding!

The family must have saved for months, or maybe years, to make the feast of several days possible. They likely had everything planned, checking their lists and re-checking them to be sure that there would be enough of everything. As we know from the story, however, they ran out of juice, and only by Jesus' miracle did the feast continue on in joyful celebration.

I like the way a lady named Ellen, herself a wife, tells the story: "He who gave Eve to Adam as a helpmeet performed His first miracle at the marriage festival. In this festal hall, where friends and relatives rejoiced together, He commenced His public ministry. By His presence at the gathering, our Savior sanctioned marriage, recognizing it as an institution He Himself had formed. In the beginning, when the Sabbath law was given to man, the marriage law was also given. Then God bestowed on man His two great gifts -- woman as helpmeet, and the Sabbath as a day of rest." In the midst of our normal duties relating to Streams of Light, our office family has the privilege of sharing a delightful celebration this weekend. Kristin, my fellow assistant to Patsy in the Philanthropy office, will be married on Sunday. Truly she is a great gift not only to us, but also and even more so to her fiancé.

Will you join us in covering the two of them in prayer this weekend and into next week as they begin their new life together?

On behalf of Patsy Wagner,

Heidi C. Corder
Assistant, Office of Philanthropy
