Do not conform to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve what
God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:2 NIV
When things aren't going well in our lives, we often refer to Jeremiah 29:11 for comfort: "For I know the plans I have for you," says The Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Yet we often forget the context of this verse. These people had been exiled to Babylon and Jeremiah is telling them they will be there for 70 years! In other words, they were in captivity; they were slaves; they were facing extreme tribulation! He reminds them that God has a plan -- a plan for good!
We often think that the Christian life means a life of ease. We live in a sin-filled world. It's not going to be smooth sailing down here. Jesus himself even said so in John 16:33: "Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world."
Could it be that God allows the trials to help us grow in our faith and trust in Him? My favorite verse says: "Trust in The Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." (Prov. 3:5-6).
Trust is hard for us! We want to do everything ourselves. Yet, the God of the Universe is waiting to help us. He's waiting to lead us through the dark valleys into the light of His presence. All we have to do is surrender our will to His.
My prayer today is for us to trust in God more and focus less on our problems. He will carry us through whatever difficulty has come to us. Remember, He has overcome the world.
