Optimize Immune System

Health Tip 1:
Our immune system is so amazing! God gave us two different types of immunity.

Our immune system is so amazing! God gave us two different types of immunity. Innate immunity comes into play immediately or within hours of a threat to the body. These non-specific defense mechanisms include physical barriers such as our skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and the respiratory tract as well as gastric acid, saliva, tears, and sweat. It also includes specific types of white blood cells, or leukocytes, which patrol the entire body by way of the circulatory system. Phagocytes engulf and destroy bacteria and viruses. Natural killer cells look for infected host cells and destroy them in order to stop the spread of infection. These are only two types of leukocytes that are on patrol for us. There are many more.

The other type of immunity is adaptive or acquired immunity. Adaptive immunity uses specific antigens or proteins to mount a strategical immune response. Exposure to pathogens activates it. It then memorizes the organisms that pose a threat for the future. It is slower to respond to threats and infections than the innate immune response. B cells and T cells are the soldiers of the adaptive immune response.

There is a lot of talk about boosting our immune system so we do not get sick. However, boosting it could create some problems. There are diseases in which our immune system gets carried away and attacks the body or specific cells in the body. Type 1 diabetes, Grave’s disease, Hashimoto’s disease, and MS are examples of an immune system gone haywire. What we actually want to do is optimize our immune system so that it can function as it should and as well as it can.
