On a chilly November weekend, the boys’ soccer team from Upper Columbia Academy (UCA) embarked on a journey to western Washington, uncertain of the triumphs that awaited them. UCA had earned their spots in the 2023 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) state soccer tournament.

“The year did not start off as we had planned for our boys’ soccer team,” shared coach Ryan Irwin, UCA athletic director. “At Walla Walla University’s Fall Classic, the team lost in their first match, but took the loss and improved the rest of the season.”

The tournament began the weekend before with eight schools, by that Saturday evening UCA’s soccer team, the Lions, had advanced to the final four with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Mount Vernon Christian School from Mount Vernon, WA.

“Not only did these guys dominate on the soccer field, but I have been impressed at the way they connect with players from the other teams, support each other, and the way they kept their focus on God throughout the season,” explained Irwin.

When the weekend finally arrived, the team was uncertain if they could play because of the Sabbath. However, WIAA accommodated the Lions’ schedule, allowing their state final games to be played outside of Sabbath hours at the Federal Way Memorial Stadium in Federal Way, WA.

The semi-final game was played Friday afternoon. After a 4-0 win against Riverside Christian School from Yakima, Washington, the Lions secured their spot in the final game against Orcas Island High School from Eastsound, WA.

The highly anticipated final game took place on a Saturday night, and it lived up to the excitement. Parents and supporters from Adventist communities across the state rallied to support the Lions. UCA quickly took a 1-0 lead within the first two minutes, courtesy of a long crossing pass and score from senior Maddox Mack to freshman Ethan Fly. Before the 8-minute mark, senior Owen Hickok extended UCA’s lead with a mid-range strike. Throughout the match, the Lions’ defense showcased resilience with several saves, while junior goalkeeper Saylor Jordan exhibited superb goalkeeping skills.

As the final whistle echoed, the crowd and team erupted in celebration of UCA’s win. “Winning state and making history in front of my dad and grandpa was one of the best experiences of my life,” shared Ethan Fly, freshmen forward. “I wouldn’t trade that moment, when the game ended, for anything else.”

The UCA sports program not only delivered a historic victory but also imparted valuable lessons to the team.

“I am really impressed with the guy’s win at State Championships,” said Irwin. “They made a conscience effort at the beginning of the year to set goals and achieve them!”

In recognition of their achievement, UCA’s first state championship banner will be presented by the WIAA and proudly displayed in the gym, serving as a lasting testament to the team’s dedication and success in the 2023 WIAA Boys Soccer State Championships.
