October: Pastor Appreciation Month

October 12, 2021

Looking for ways to recognize your pastoral staff? Here are some ways to consider.

Eric Brown

Director, UCC Ministerial Department

What comes to mind when you think about the month of October? Some think of the iconic fall images of the deciduous South. Others think of breast cancer awareness. The young at heart are filled with joy as they think of fall festivals in years past. Of the almost 130 recognitions dedicated to October, one that stands out is Clergy Appreciation Month, also known as Pastor Appreciation Month.

As a brief reminder, pastors are privileged to see the good, the bad, and the ugly within the congregations. They are on call 24/7, they give Bible studies, provide counselling, and carve out time for God and their families. Some pastors do all of the above while pursuing a degree. No matter what role your pastor plays in your life (leader, teacher, counselor, custodian, or friend), he or she is worthy of the counsel Paul gave to Timothy: “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine” (1Timothy 5:17).

Here are some ways you can honor your pastor:

  • Express your appreciation for all he or she and their families do
  • Drop off a healthy, delicious meal for your pastor and family to enjoy
  • Do some sleuthing to discover items on your pastor’s wish list and provide at least one
  • Prayerfully attend a Bible study with your pastor and befriend the interest
  • Speaking of prayer, pray for your pastor and family daily, and when given the opportunity, pray with and over them
  • Discover your pastor’s needs around the house and volunteer to assist with yardwork or home repairs
  • Donate your professional skills (tutoring, accounting, musical, etc.) to your pastor and family

This list is not exhaustive. May you keep this matter in prayer and do as the Lord leads.
